About the occult...what kind of view do you have on it? How did you come to accept those matters in Palm? In short, do you really believe in such things? Or did you just put that for certain effects, emphasizing your theme? Can these occult things be called on miracles?

실제로 심령현상들, 그러니까 초현실적이거나 신비주의적인 일들에 대해 어떻게 생각하고 있고, 왜 팜 속에 그런 내용들을 넣게 되었는지 궁금합니다. 정말로 그런 일이 일어난다고 믿고 계신 건가요? 아니면 작품의 주제를 강조하기 위해 효과면에서 그런 내용을 넣으신 건가요? 이런 오컬트적 요소들 또한 팜 속에 등장하는 일련의 기적들의 연장선상에 놓여 있는 듯한데, 그런 의미인가요?

I am actually an amateur fortune teller and people often ask me the very same question,
"Do you believe in such things?" I would say, No, I don't. Maybe I can explain it like this, I use language all the time but I never believe it. Somebody (who most people don't know) invented it and it always can be uncertain or a lie. Even if we only talk or write completely honestly because it's just signals we make. We all know that. But we use it. Like that, I never believe such things, just use them or live with them - Like everybody does, whether they notice that or not. I think you already found how things go in PALM. It is impossible to write the story without the occult, just like it is impossible to write without language. And maybe we can call some of the occult 'miracles' if we wish on occasion.

사실 전 아마추어 점술사입니다. "정말 그런 걸 다 믿는단 말이에요?"라는 질문을 자주 듣곤 하죠.
하지만 제 대답은, 믿지 않는다 쪽입니다. 이렇게 설명하면 될까요. 전 언제나 언어를 사용하고는 있지만, 그것을 믿지는 않지요. 언어란 다른 누군가가 만든 것이기 때문에 언제나 불확실하며, 거짓일 가능성도 있습니다. 우리가 아주 정직하게 이야기하거나 글을 쓴다 한들 언어는 우리가 만든 기호체계에 불과할 뿐이지요. 모두 다 그 사실을 알고 있고요. 하지만 여전히, 우리들은 그 언어를 사용하며 살아갑니다. 마찬가지로, 저는 그런 심령현상들을 절대 믿지는 않지만, 그것들을 사용하며, 또 그것들과 함께 살아가고 있습니다. 다른 모든 사람들과 마찬가지로, 실제로 그것을 인식하건, 인식하지 않건 간에 말입니다. 벌써 [팜]의 사건들이 어떻게 돌아가는지 알고 계시겠지요. 오컬트적인 요소 없이 스토리를 쓰는 것은 불가능합니다. 우리들이 언어 없이 글을 쓰는 게 불가능하듯 말입니다. 그리고 어쩌면, 그런 오컬트적 요소들을 "기적"이라고 불러도 무리가 없을 것 같군요.

It is said that "satire denounces the world, wit penetrates it, humor accepts it, but nonsense transforms it." In this sense, which of these elements take part in PALM do you think? And which of these elements do you think each character reveals?

풍자는 세상을 비난하고, 위트는 세상을 간파하며, 유머는 세상을 받아들이지만, 넌센스는 세상을 변화시킨다고 하죠. [팜]은 이것들 중 어떤 요소로 이루어져 있다고 생각하시나요? 그리고 각 캐릭터들은 어떤 요소를 드러내고 있을까요?

I think most of the main characters of PALM reveal the first or the second element. But it seems to me some characters do the third one - like Shin Gallagher!

[팜] 주요 캐릭터들의 대부분은 풍자나 위트 쪽에 종사한다고 생각합니다. 하지만 유머에 주력하는 캐릭터도 몇몇 있죠. 신 갤러거처럼요.

What about PALM in a film? If you were to direct the film version of the comics, what in character, situation or action of the character(s) would you like to emphasize which the comics did not? Or what would you de-emphasize that you've already emphasized? And this is just for fun..; whom do you want to cast as main characters?

[팜]을 영화로 만든다면 어떨까요? 만약 [팜]의 영화 버젼을 감독하게 된다면, 캐릭터나 상황 혹은 액션 중 만화와는 다르게 강조하고 싶은 부분이 있나요? 아니면 어떤 강조점은조금 줄인다든지? 그리고 그냥 재미로 하는 질문인데요...주인공들로 캐스트하고 싶은 배우들이 있나요?

I have already prepared a complete scenario and sketch for an animated "The Sea Shouldn't exist". The story is mostly the same as the comic, but the characters should be much more human. This means that expression should be more important than "beauty(or anything)" in the film.

"존재하지 않는 바다" 애니메이션 판의 시나리오와 스케치는 이미 끝내두었습니다. 내용은 만화와 거의 동일하지만, 캐릭터들이 훨씬 더 인간적이지요. 즉 "아름다움" 같은 것보다는 실제적인 표현이 훨씬 더 중요하게 다뤄지길 바란다는 말입니다.

How do you feel about your art skills in "The Sea Shouldn't Exist"?
Is there anything you do not like? Your style changes often, have you got any intentions about that?

"존재하지 않는 바다" 편의 그림체에 대해 어떻게 생각하세요? 맘에 들지 않는 부분이 있나요? 그림체가 많이 변하는 편인데, 그 의도는 무엇입니까?

I was quite satisfied with picture of "The Sea Shouldn't Exist" but the style of my drawing becoming complete in this few years so it was just on processes.

저는 "존재하지 않는 바다"의 그림에 대해선 만족하는 편입니다. 하지만 제 그림 스타일이 지난 몇 년 간 완성되었던지라, 그 때의 그림체가 아직 변형선상에 있었던 거지요.

How do you keep your deadlines and discuss with WINGS staff in Australia? Do you mail your work by DHL?

호주에 거주하고 계신 걸로 알고 있는데, WINGS 편집부와는 원고에 대한 상의나 마감은 어떤 식으로 하고 계시는지, 원고는 어떻게 일본으로 보내는지 궁금합니다. (역시 DHL인가요?)


ANS
We set the deadline one month before the real deadline after I moved to AUS. I send the original by EMS. I have never discussed the story with WINGS staff but we are in contact by E-mail.

호주로 온 다음에는 마감을 실제 마감일보다 한달 더 앞당겼습니다. 원고 원본은 EMS로 보내지요. WINGS 편집부랑 원고에 대해 상의한 적은 전혀 없지만, 계속 이메일로 연락을 하고 있습니다.

It sounds easy to me. But we never know what is the destiny, don't you think?

Your son Task, does he still like James best, though he has now grown up? Doesn't he have any other characters in favorite?

I asked him about it. For now, his favorite character in PALM is Boaz Ulmann, he said. Tasuku is a rap boy. Black people and musicians are his idol and Boaz is both!

물어보았는데, 지금 제일 좋아하는 캐릭터는 보어즈 울만이라네요. 타스크는 랩 매니아인데다가 뮤지션과 흑인들을 좋아하는데, 보어즈는 양쪽 다에 해당하니까요!

Any feelings in particular, aging with the characters? Is there huge difference in describing the characters, now yourself older than them?

캐릭터들과 함께 나이를 먹어가는 것에 대해 어떻게 생각하세요? 지금은 그들보다 나이가 든 상태일텐데, 예전과는 달리 캐릭터 묘사에 차이가 생겼나요?

ANS
It seem there's no big difference to me. I'm very clear about my age, 38, a bit too old for a lover (specially in Japan!), a bit too young for a (real) writer. But on the other hand, my time has stopped when I started to write Palm. I am still 11 to 15 in a part of my mind.

그다지 큰 차이는 없는 것 같아요. 제 나이 38세로는, 누군가의 연인이 되기에는 조금 늙었고(특히 일본에는요), 진짜 작가가 되기에는 조금 어린 나이지요. 하지만 한편으로 제가 팜을 그리기 시작했을 때 시간이 멈춘 것 같기도 합니다. 제 마음 한 구석에서 저는 아직 11세에서 15세 정도랍니다.
